I do tend to get a lot of similar blood sugar related questions so let’s cover a few of them here. I’m always available to answer all your questions via email.
–Why do you recommend CoqQ10 for a boy?? It lowers blood sugar!
When you’re eating the High Everything Diet for a boy, you will be eating frequent meals and snacks, with protein + carbs at every meal and snack (if possible.) This will keep your blood sugar up even with the (minor) effects of the CoQ10 lowering blood sugar. I recommend CoQ10 for blue swayers because for ladies, it may help you grow and maintain muscle, and for gents it may help raise sperm count and quality.
The dose of CoQ10 for blue swayers is 100 mg daily till BFP (positive pregnancy test) at which point you should gradually wean off by spacing doses further and further out till down to one per week, then you can drop it.
–If CoQ10 lowers blood sugar, should I use it for pink?
As a general rule I do not have pink swayers take CoQ10. This is because it may help grow and maintain muscle, which we don’t want for pink. But if you have concerns about egg quality, you’re more than welcome to take it. It does lower blood sugar levels a wee bit when coupled with an overall LE-type diet, which may benefit both your pink sway and your egg quality. I will sometimes add it in for pink swayers when people are struggling to get pregnant or testing has revealed diminished egg quality, and we’ve still gotten girls (this does not mean CoQ10 sways pink necessarily (we don’t have the data to say), just that it’s not a dealbreaker with an otherwise good pink sway.
The dose of CoQ10 for egg quality is 400-600 mg daily till BFP (positive pregnancy test) at which point you should gradually wean off by spacing doses further and further out till down to one per week, then you can drop it. If this sounds like a lot (and the stuff is very expensive) feel free to reduce this to 200 mg or even less than that.
–Can I take apple cider vinegar (ACV) for a boy for alkalinity?
NO. Please do not take apple cider vinegar. It really lowers blood sugar significantly (far more than CoQ10 does), and while you will be on the HE Diet which keeps your blood sugar up, since the alkaline diet has been totally debunked anyway it is NOT worth the risk. If you want to drink something for alkalinity please drink lemon water instead.
–If apple cider vinegar lowers blood sugar, should I take it for a girl?
NO. Please do not take apple cider vinegar. It lowers blood sugar so much that if you’re on the LE Diet it can make you become very shaky, weak, and possibly even faint from low blood sugar. Having severely low blood sugar also causes cravings that undermine your ability to stick to the diet. Plus, many sources do recommend it for boys…now, I happen to believe those recommendations are based on questionable science, but most people want to avoid everything that’s even been rumored to sway blue.
Apple cider vinegar is one of those things I don’t believe are a good idea for pink or blue.
–Should I take Cinnamon for a girl?
It depends. If you have moderate to severe PCOS and/or more than 50 lbs to spare a SMALL amount of cinnamon ~may~ help, but be sure it’s Ceylon cinnamon and not cassia. Cassia cinnamon may be harmful and should be avoided. And by small, I mean SMALL. 1/2 teaspoon during the follicular phase, 1/4 teaspoon during the luteal phase. Some people take 1/4 teaspoon and 1/8 teaspoon instead, and unless you have proven PCO and more than 50 lbs to spare this is what I’d start with to see how you tolerate that. Then, gradually wean back to dietary amounts at BFP. The capsules they see in stores have quite a lot more cinnamon than that and while you can use them, you need to open them up and measure the amount to be sure you’re not getting too much. Too high a dose can lower your blood sugar very far and make you shaky and weak and even faint. If you combine it with other supplements (aspirin, cranberry, turmeric, fish oil, plus many others) it can thin your blood substantially, which may cause or contribute to miscarriage and even your death were you to be too severely affected by it. Cinnamon when you don’t need it can also cause wicked cravings that undermine your ability to stick to LE Diet.
As for you, blue swayers, cinnamon in dietary amounts only. ON HE Diet you’ll be eating often enough it’s unlikely you’ll get low blood sugar (and you for sure won’t just from eating a cinnamon roll or whatever) but please don’t go overboard with it. Be on the lookout for cinnamon teas, which is mostly where you’d get a lot of cinnamon. Avoid them.
–Should I take Myoinositol for a girl?
It depends. If you have moderate to severe PCOS and/or more than 50 lbs to spare OR have very poor egg quality (unless you are BMI 21 or less, in which case please skip it) it may be a good addition to your sway plan. Only if you are not on Metformin, though – Metformin is a better way to do the same job. Take 1000 to 2000 mg myoinositol daily through the follicular phase. Half the dose or take it every other day during the luteal phase. At BFP gradually wean off by spacing doses further and further out till down to one per week, then you can drop them. If you are medicating yourself without a diagnosis of PCOS, I would stick with the 1000 mg dose. For those who are already below BMI of 21, while I’d prefer you didn’t use it at all, if you MUST, please no more than 500 mg in the follicular phase, 500 every other day in the luteal.
–So does Metformin sway pink, then?
Yes, we believe that it does. Please follow your doctor’s guidelines about dose and when and how to come off it for pregnancy. Some people stay on the metformin, others come off it. I do suggest weaning off it even if your doc says it’s not necessary. There’s no harm in weaning off, and possible help. Just space doses further and further out till down to one per week, then drop.
–But I have to be on Metformin and I want a boy!
If you need to be on Metformin and you want a boy, that’s ok! Just do the HE Diet, take your supplements, exercise (cardio 30-45 minutes a day, 5 days a week, weights up to 5 days a week – try not to let your exercise sessions extend beyond 45 minutes consecutively, though…at least not without eating something in the middle). Be sure you are avoiding very high carb foods like bananas, potatoes, bread, dried fruit, and fruit juice since you likely have trouble with high blood sugar and they make your blood sugar very high. I PROMISE you can have a great sway without those foods! Do still eat protein and carbs at every meal and snack, just don’t overdo the very sugary carby foods.
–Should I eat white or whole grain foods for pink/blue?
White vs. whole grains is one of the biggest unknowns with swaying. The truth is, we honestly do not know what is best. We started off thinking that white flour would sway pink and whole grains sway blue, but in terms of results that has not panned out in any definitive way. Pink swayers are getting good results with whole grains, and blue swayers, a whole lot of you need to cut way back on ALL grains because you may end up gaining weight quite rapidly if you eat them. (Grain-based foods are NOT mandatory for blue sways, not at all – while protein + carbs does sway blue, the carbs do not have to come from grain foods!) ALL PCOSers, people with insulin resistance, 30 or more lbs to spare, and anyone with lower egg quality MUST use whole grains only (regardless of how you are swaying!) because white flour can cause your blood sugar to go up high and stay up (remember, sky high blood sugar is not good for anyone) which can mess up your cycle and your egg quality.
–Should I eat the keto or Atkins Diet for pink or blue?
Some pink swayers get so hung up on “low blood sugar” for pink they decide to go on the Atkins Diet for their sway. And some blue swayers think that keto diets just have to be good for blue because of all the meat in them. But the problem is, there is a lot of mixed evidence as to their safety when trying to conceive – being in ketosis may be harmful to unborn babies, and many women on keto/Atkins Diets have seen huge disturbances in their menstrual cycles – some have even seen their period go missing entirely. Additionally, for pink sways, these types of diets are high fat and protein which likely sways blue, and for blue sways, remember, it’s not JUST protein but protein + carbs that makes boys!! The truth is, we don’t know how these diets sway and they’re not proven safe, thus it’s best to avoid them.
I prefer you guys follow the Low Everything Diet for pink and High Everything Diet for blue instead. I have tricks to tweak the diets for a variety of scenarios and dietary needs, so just message me if you need more help with that. This is the type of thing I do all the time through the coaching service.
–Wait, what? Protein plus carbs makes boys?
Yes. We have reason to believe that eating protein and carbs together at every meal and snack (or at least most of them) sways blue because it helps keep your blood sugar in a normal zone for longer after eating. If something comes up and you can’t have both protein and carbs, it’s ok, just eat again sooner rather than later.
Pink swayers, this DOES NOT MEAN that you have to therefore eat only protein or only carbs. In fact, please DON’T. The HE and LE Diets are different in lots of ways and so many of the rules are different. You will very likely need to eat protein and carbs together because you are going to need to in order to get your nutrients in for the day. Trying to split these nutrients up will make it much harder to stick with the diet and is so control freakish it may sway blue anyway. Please feel free to eat protein and carbs together for pink. It is simply that blue swayers HAVE TO.
–Should I fast for pink? And can I fast for blue?
Pink swayers, if possible you should do an overnight fast of 12-16 hours. No more than that! Fasting longer simply will make you stop ovulating even if your calorie count is adequate. You do not get extra credit points for starving yourself with a pink sway – remember we need to get pregnant at the end of this! You don’t need to stop having breakfast – both 2 and 3 meals are equally fine and both allowed, whichever works best for you – just push it back an hour or two. There is no set time to eat, just whenever you need to, and you are not tied to a time on the clock. Some days you’ll need to eat sooner and that’s ok. But you do not need to fast any longer than that you should not try.
Blue swayers, you should never go longer than 12 hours overnight without eating, and more like 8-10 is likely better. Have a bedtime snack and then eat breakfast first thing if you can. I cannot recommend blue swayers TTC during Ramadan or other religious fasts. We have seen disproportionate numbers of girls conceived to women who conceived then.
Also, blue swayers, while you don’t have to stick perfectly to the 3 meals and 3 snacks a day for blue recommendation, it’s best if you don’t go hungry during the day if you can possibly help it. Small meals and snacks are fine if you just can’t eat much at one sitting – even if you can’t eat as much as some other people have eaten, all you need to do is eat more than you were eating recently, and/or when you got your girls. If you’ve eaten a big meal, it’s ok to skip a snack and just have your next meal, but try not to let yourself get very hungry between mealtimes.
–Should I do a water or Crystal Light fast around ovulation for pink?
NO! Please, PLEASE PLEASE do not fast longer than overnight EVER. There is no benefit to be had from it (we know based on our results that diet even when done very strictly, for less than 6 weeks was useless, so given that, there is no way one single day could possibly sway) and a sudden reduction in nutrients will often trigger your body to delay or even stop ovulation. We have witnessed firsthand several people who tried to starve themselves just prior to ovulation who simply did not ovulate till many weeks later – generally after having to eat much more blue friendly than they had been eating to begin with.
Plus, fasting on water or Crystal Light is insanely unhealthy and could even KILL you by making your electrolytes get out of whack (those following the mineral balancing diets, your electrolytes are likely already out of whack!) Just follow the LE Diet the same as you have been all along.
–We are drinking coffee for pink, but I heard that raises blood sugar?
I have a long explanation of this in my next blog entry the vices of swaying so I won’t go into it here, but we know based on our results that coffee is pink friendly. Don’t let theoretical concerns (most of which have zero evidence backing them up) stop you from doing what has worked for most people, most of the time!)
Blue swayers, regardless of what you read on other sites about coffee swaying blue, they are WRONG. Please cut way back on coffee or even drop it in favor of tea.
–We are drinking alcohol for pink, but I heard that raises blood sugar?
I have a long explanation of this in my next blog entry the vices of swaying so I won’t go into it here, but we know based on our results that alcohol is pink friendly. Don’t let theoretical concerns (most of which have zero evidence backing them up) stop you from doing what has worked for most people, most of the time!)
–Does this mean I can’t ever have alcohol when swaying blue?
You can have some alcohol on special occasions, just don’t go overboard with it. Red wine and dark beers are also very nutritious. I would not have a drink a day, or have a heavy night of binge drinking (especially not regularly) but instead cut back to once a week and/or a couple drinks on holidays and celebrations. Alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop, so be sure to eat generously when drinking.
If you can’t control what your husband does, just let it go. While it’s best if he doesn’t drink, and even better if he never binge drinks, if he has a boys’ night and overindulges, it’s of much less consequence for the sway than it is were you to do the same thing. The more we try to police our hubby’s behavior, the more miserable and cranky they get with swaying – in some cases to such extent that they’ll stop swaying all together. Some men have even decided to pull the plug on having another baby all together! It’s best to let the little things go to ensure that the big things are achieved. Remember the cardinal rule of swaying: “If Daddy ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” – both he and you will be a lot less stressed if he blows off some steam now and then.
