There is no one size fits all sway and each of us must consider our history, genetics, and environment to figure out what is the best sway for us. What is right for the majority, may not be right for you. Here are some tips for handling the most common kinds of blood sugar issues you may be dealing with when on a swaying diet.
First and foremost, you need to eat the type of diet that is right for you regardless of how it may sway. You need to take your medications that your doctor prescribes for you and follow his/her instructions to the best of your ability and then fit swaying in around that. And you need to NOT take medications that aren’t prescribed for you – this sounds like a no-brainer, but when swaying it can be oh-so-tempting just to give Mother Nature a pharmaceutical assist. Don’t.
Research indicates that keeping blood sugar on the low side is important for conceiving pink. But if you are one of many millions of people who have issues with regulating your blood sugar, this can be a difficult task.
HYPOGLYCEMIA is severely low blood sugar levels (Unlike the common usage of the term, hypoglycemia is NOT just getting shaky when you’re hungry or having a blood sugar crash after eating candy. That’s normal. It is a medically diagnosed problem stemming from overproduction of insulin OR as a result of having to take insulin shots to control diabetes).
Pink swayers: Hypoglycemia can be aggravated by the “Crash-and-Burn” style of LE Diet where you skip breakfast, eat mostly carbs, and wait a long time between meals. But that’s ok! You can still sway pink! Don’t skip breakfast or wait many hours to eat. Eat 4 or even 5 meals throughout the day. Avoid white flour, sugar, simple carbohydrates, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. Rather than eating the foods listed in the standard LE Diet, instead choose lean protein sources such as chicken, nuts, eggs (it’s still a good idea to avoid red meat), whole grains, and vegetables. Eat some protein and some carbs at every meal, but aim for smaller servings. 3 oz. of meat (the size of a deck of cards) will have plenty of protein in it. Avoid sodium (if you’re limiting it, that is – it is likely you do not need to do this. Limit fat whenever you can, WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE DIET, as long as your body tolerates it. Some people need fat with every meal to slow down their rises and falls in blood sugar, so if that is you, please eat what helps you get through the day.
Craisins and cranberry juice (or fruit juice of any kind) are NOT allowed. You can use artificial sweeteners like aspartame IF it is ok with your doctor (do not use Truvia, it may sway blue). Some doctors advise against dairy products and others are ok with them, please ask and see what your doctor suggests. Avoid skim dairy if you have hypoglycemia as full fat is much better for your blood sugar levels. Full fat dairy ONLY!
You can see that this is still different than a boy-friendly diet and you may find that you lose some weight on it (this can help with some kinds of hypoglycemia, but you need to consult a doctor about whether weight loss is a good thing for you). The good news is, you may be more likely to conceive a girl anyway because of your naturally low blood glucose levels. We had a swayer once with severe hypoglycemia who really had a heck of a time on gender swaying diets – and once she gave up swaying totally, she had twin girls!
IMPORTANT – I hope it is obvious that you should not be taking prescription drugs unless they have been prescribed to you for a diagnosed medical condition. Don’t take your mom’s metformin and for the love of all that is holy, do not take insulin you don’t need – you can die. I know that for most people this seems like a totally unnecessary warning, but there are some people out there on social media telling swayers to do things nearly this dangerous, so.
Blue swayers: If you are swaying for a boy and you have hypoglycemia, do pretty much the same style of swaying that you would do anyway. 3 meals a day plus 3 snacks, and be sure to eat breakfast. Focus on protein (esp. red meat, nuts, eggs, whole grains, full fat dairy, and vegetables.) Eat salmon twice a week. Protein plus carbs at every meal and every snack. Avoid white flour, sugar, simple carbohydrates, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. Potatoes with skin are considered complex carbohydrates and are usually allowed in hypoglycemic diets, so load up! You should also eat work hard to up your intake of healthy fats. Full fat dairy ONLY, no carby milk replacers (we have found milk replacers to sway pink anyway and from here on in blue swayers should strictly limit and/or avoid them.)
Unfortunately, you must also avoid fruit and fruit juice and the caffeine in tea is not allowed. Tomato juice is usually well tolerated, as is coconut water, but have them WITH meals. You can use Truvia artificial sweetener but should avoid other artificial sweeteners if you can.
This is a very healthy diet and you may have trouble gaining weight on it. If possible, DO try to gain 3-5 pounds of muscle while doing moderate exercise and lifting weights 4 times a week, IF it is ok with your doctor. If you just can’t gain, that’s ok, hold steady where you are.
If you require medication to raise your blood glucose levels, that may help you sway blue but even if you don’t, by eating regular meals with protein and carbs will keep your blood sugar on an even keel and help you conceive a baby boy! (Please do not take medicine that has not been prescribed to you just on a suspicion you have low blood sugar and want to raise it. Blood sugar is something that can make you very ill if you mess with it medically, so please do not even consider doing this. A nutrient dense diet is the way to sway blue, not medication.)
HYPERGLYCEMIA is a chronic and/or severe abundance of glucose in the blood. It’s very dangerous, is usually indicative of diabetes or prediabetes, and you may need medication to lower your blood sugar levels. Please take your medication regardless of how you think it might sway. This is NON-NEGOTIABLE.
INSULIN RESISTANCE is a very common early stage of hyperglycemia where your body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin and although it is released, your body can no longer react to it and so your blood sugar levels stay high after eating.
For pink and blue: Interestingly, the diet for hyperglycemia/insulin resistance is quite similar to the diet described for hypoglycemia above. A diet that is healthful for blood sugar works regardless of whether your blood sugar is low or high. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may need to be medicated (many of these medications tend to sway pink by lowering blood sugar levels, but PLEASE do not be tempted to skip your medication, blue swayers) You may need to limit your carbs much more strictly than you do with hypoglycemia.
Pink swayers: Losing weight is often one of the best things you can do if you are developing insulin resistance (that will later lead to Type 2 diabetes and hyperglycemia). Under the supervision of your doctor, it is advisable to try to lose as much weight as you can – at least to our “hold steady” cutoff of BMI 21, and under no circumstances drop below BMI 18.5 – through diet and exercise, and this alone may cure your insulin resistance. If this feels unreachable, the good news is even very small weight loss, as little as 5 lbs, has improved insulin response.
Blue swayers: Even though weight loss does tend to sway pink, slow healthy weight loss while focusing on building muscle mass through exercise will help sway blue and some very heavy women actually find that losing weight helps boost their fertility, which may sway blue. This is especially true if you conceived girls while at a higher weight.
Many times, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes go hand in hand with heart disease and hypertension. For this reason, it is wise to avoid increasing sodium intake for blue.
WARNING – Exercise is usually great for lowering blood sugar levels in people with insulin resistance/diabetes, but in some people with full blown diabetes, it can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate. Exercise should be done only under your doctor’s supervision especially if you are on medication for blood sugar issues.
Now, onto the good stuff – The atomic fertility diet posted below for ways to vary your sway diet to be better for your blood sugar.
So without any further ado here is the diet I have come up with that is suitable for pink and blue swayers who have blood sugar issues. Note, this is not the LE Diet, this is not the HE Diet, it can be compatible with both with a few minor tweaks, however. I originally had this in pink and blue writing, but that formatting has not been perfectly imported to this blog which does not seem to have the full amount of colors available for text, and I had to put some of the Blue info in gray, and the Pink in red.
This diet is based on Doctors Paul and Shou-Ching’s book “The Perfect Health Diet”
and Dr. Jeremy Groll’s book “Fertility Foods”
Do not worry about counting calories per se (although many people do still choose to try to fit in the limits for the LE Diet, you don’t have to if you’re following this diet). Go off the quantities of food and don’t worry about the particulars. This can be IMPERATIVE if you are a pink swayer who may have cut back too far and dieted too strictly for too long – you may need to let go of calorie restrictions because if you keep focusing on them, you will be unable to relax enough to follow a more fertility-friendly diet. Remember, swaying is a radio dial, not a light switch!!
***3 lbs. plant foods per day broken up into the following 3 categories:
–1 lb “safe starches” (white rice, white potato, sweet potato, taro, plantain, tapioca, AND I include brown rice and oatmeal for blue swayers. Pink swayers with moderate to severe PCOS or Type 2 diabetes may also prefer to use brown rice.) AVOID wheat, corn, and products made from them like breads, pasta, tortillas, and other baked goods.
PINK swayers: white rice and white potato are best, you can also have sweet potato in moderation but remember these are more nutrient dense.
BLUE Swayers: Sweet potatoes and brown rice are better for you. Oatmeal is a blue-friendly food that you can have as much as once a day provided that you do not have PCOS running out of control – if you do, you may need to avoid ALL grains including brown rice and oatmeal.
–1 pound fruit and/or sugary (higher carb) vegetables such as beets, carrots, turnips, and winter squash, but NOT corn, peas, beans – above all, avoid soy based foods.
Pink swayers you will want to focus more on lower nutrient fruits (although this has really not seemed to make any difference at all)
Blue swayers: limit/avoid lower nutrient fruits like apples and do NOT drink any fruit juices or eat dried fruits, they are too carb heavy and will aggravate PCO-tendencies.
***1 serving of full fat dairy per day – This is good for EVERYONE who is trying to conceive. This can be in the form of whole milk or full fat yogurt such as Brown Cow or Mountain High brand. Natural cheeses such as cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack are allowed, avoid processed cheeses like Velveeta or American. AVOID skim and part-skim dairy, it is bad for fertility. (keep an eye on your yogurts, if it’s not full fat, it needs to go)
*** 1/2 to 1 lb of meat per day. 2 days a week but no more than that, eat a serving of salmon. You will need to avoid shellfish, whitefish, and tuna because you can only have fish 2x aweek when TTC and you are already getting that from the salmon. (the salmon is healthiest and best option)
Avoid all processed meats like lunch meat, hot dogs, bacon, ham. Even the so-called “nitrate free” products have nitrates, it’s just that they are derived from vegetable concentrates and chemically are the same stuff. Pork is ok for pink swayers for an occasional cheat but pork probably has too many Omega 6 fats for blue swayers to include very often.
Pink swayers – Eat the lower level of meat intake and stick to lean white chicken and turkey. Do NOT use the shellfish/whitefish option that I often recommend for pink, because you will already be having fish 2x a week and when TTC you should only eat fish 2x a week.
Blue swayers – Upper level of meat intake, stick with beef, goat, lamb, game meats, and only occasionally pork and dark meat poultry.
***Eggs. Avoid the eggs that are advertised as being high in Omega 6 fats and supposedly “healthy” – while they may be good for heart health, they are not healthy for fertility because too many Omega 6 fats is not optimal!! For pink swayers and for any blue swayers feeling particularly stuffed, on the days you eat eggs, you may want to eat a bit less meat because the protein in the eggs will compensate for the protein in the meat.
Pink swayers – 4-6 eggs a week
Blue swayers – 2 eggs per day (this is an average, if you had a big omelet one day with 4 eggs then you can skip eggs the next day and eat more meat)
***Fat intake. No one should be eating an extremely low fat diet while TTC. I repeat – NO ONE SHOULD BE EATING VERY LOW FAT WHEN TTC. You NEED fat for your body to be able to make the sex hormones that enable us to get and stay pregnant.
Pink swayers – If you have been avoiding or limiting fat, increase intake to the upper level of LE Diet – 60 g. Focus on Omega 6 fats like vegetable oils. However, if you have truly gone on swaying a very long time and are ready to pull out all the stops in order to get pregnant, start gradually increasing intake of Omega 3 and saturated fat…but be aware you will already be DOING this by adding in full fat dairy, eggs, and salmon. I recommend giving it a couple months just with that change before upping intake of blue-friendly fat.
Blue swayers – Focus on Omega 3 and saturated fat. Limit Omega 6 intake. Do NOT take evening primrose oil unless you are on a very strict, low carb keto diet (and I do not recommend keto for anyone while trying to conceive.) NO flaxseed or flaxseed oil, period. Flax products may not be safe when trying to conceive and pregnant.
Avocado every day and coconut oil daily is also beneficial but be sure you’re keeping a higher intake of Omega 3 than 6. Nuts are great for blue but DO be aware that they have a fair amount of Omega 6 fats in them so take care to balance that with Omega 3 and saturated fat.
***Chocolate, coffee, tea, alcohol, coconut water
These are all almost certainly beneficial or acceptable for fertility in moderate amounts so as long as you do not have any known issues with egg quality. Moderate amounts of these foods/drinks as a treat are allowed for everyone. Tea is more blue-friendly than coffee, coffee is more pink-friendly than tea. High intake of caffeine is not a good idea but 2 cups a day is fine – exception being if you have suffered repeat unexplained losses and just want to do anything possible to help boost the odds a little. Alcohol should of course be avoided if you may be pregnant but it is fine beforehand – blue swayers should limit alcohol to 2x a week, pink swayers can have 1-2 alcoholic drinks daily. A minority of people with blood sugar issues – hypoglycemia in particular – cannot tolerate coffee and alcohol because it may make your blood sugar crash badly. If this is you, skip it.
Coconut water is good for both pink and blue – an easy way to get a lot of much-needed potassium for very few calories and not many carbs.
We believe milk/white chocolate is “pinker” than dark chocolate – be sure to watch out for high levels of sugar/carbs in chocolate and limit serving size! But a little chocolate can help satisfy cravings for less beneficial, empty carb foods.
We believe coffee is “pinker” than tea, and tea is “bluer” than coffee.
We believe red wine and dark beer are “bluer” than white wine, light and “lite” beer, and spirits – but on the whole we’ve gotten more girls with daily alcohol use, so blue swayers keep to 2x a week max and avoid binge drinking
***Things to AVOID when trying to boost fertility
Excessive amounts of sugar/corn syrup/artificial sweeteners – these aren’t good for anyone with blood sugar problems anyway
Wheat, corn, peas, beans and other legumes and products made from them (such as breads, pastas, tortillas)
Wheatgrass juice – despite its reputation, the Drs Jaminet, authors of the Perfect Health Diet, believe that wheat contains harmful toxins made by the plant as natural pesiticides, and should be avoided. Wheatgrass would have even MORE of these toxins than the grains themselves. Blue swayers, I feel we’ve seen a lot of opposites in those taking the most wheatgrass in supplement form. If you must use it, limit it to only 1-2 times per week and/or a few days just prior to ovulation.
Seaweed in supplement forms such as spirulina, blue-green algae, chlorella, and the drinks containing them, and also probably kelp and kelp supplements, are best avoided when TTC. They contain toxins that are produced naturally by the plant (so the “purity” of the product has nothing to do with it, this is toxin that the plant grows naturally) and are not monitored by any governmental agency in terms of safety. The Japanese snack type of seaweed is probably fine and beneficial in dietary amounts.
Very low fat and very low carb diets, and very high protein diets unless recommended by your doctor on the basis of having severe PCOS and/or insulin resistance/prediabetes
Shellfish and organ meats, processed meats with high levels of nitrates, any fish that is high in mercury, and fish in any greater amount than the salmon 2x a week
Milk replacers or skim part/skim dairy. Full fat dairy has been proven to boost fertility so drop any alternate milk replacers, particularly rice milk and soy milk. Blue swayers, we have seen milk replacers associated with lots of opposites so I can no longer sign off on anyone drinking them. Full fat dairy ONLY!
Royal Jelly and bee pollen. There is NOTHING in them other than a concentrated form of B vitamins and a little bit of fatty acid and protein (which you’ll be getting in ample amounts). Plus, it sensitizes your body to the bee venom which may prime you for a fatal allergic reaction. People have DIED, both from taking RJBP in and of itself, and then also having taken it and then bee stings or exposure to RJBP in other foods/drinks at a later time. Blue swayers, NO RJBP! IT DOES NOT SWAY BLUE AND CAN KILL YOU.
Maca – huge unknown and next to no quality info about it. One person I know started hallucinating after taking it. Studies have revealed that Maca is also one of the most likely supplements to be adulterated with other ingredients, some that do nothing and other things that could have effects we do not understand, such as herbs and even heavy metals. If you’re eating a healthy diet you don’t need it anyway so why take the risk?
Soy for both you and DH. do NOT use soy isoflavones as a DIY-Clomid. IF you’re having trouble conceiving, soy iso will only aggravate that in most cases. If you need Clomid, go to a doctor and get some.
Large intake of herbal teas such as peppermint – a cup of tea here or there is not going to have a negative effect, but even as little as 1 cup a day may have a deleterious effect on fertility. Even tea blends marketed as being GOOD for fertility often have bad juju in them (such as vitex which lowers fertility, alfalfa, and the cohoshes among many other herbs which can lower odds of conception and may reduce your body’s ability to sustain a pregnancy. Stick with regular good old tea (both green and black), good and good for ya.
